1. Haven't We Already Seen This Movie? And that movie did not end well - in fact it hasn't ended.
And what the heck is the UK going to do? What severe consequences will they visit upon Iran? Especially after the meek way the capture of those 15 Royal Navy sailors a few years ago? Too many years of being soft and permitting radical Islamicists to ruin the UK from within have left the UK, and all of Western Europe, basically indefensible against this act of war. Maybe they should ask the Israelis for some assistance.

3. Egypt - better grab on to something solid and hang on - should be a very interesting ride.
4. Lebanon - I hope this man does not meet the same fate as the late Mr. Hariri - Winds of Change in the Levant - Commentary Magazine

5. You Don't Say? Now won't this cause the left wing feminist types a dilemma? Freedoms at Risk: Arab Women Fight to Defend their Rights - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International

"The Arab Spring should liberate people not only from oppressive rulers, but also from self-destructive and delusional patterns of belief. Anti-Semitism, the “socialism of fools,” not only threatens the Israel-Egypt peace treaty and dehumanizes Jews. It also undermines rationality. It prevents its adherents from seeing the world as it is -- and it will only be an impediment to actual change in the Arab world."

9. The Words Of A Liberal For Israel - this guy seems to have his head on correctly:

"On the last night of my Israel trip, I glanced out my restaurant's window and snapped the picture above. A gay pride flag flew undisturbed in a busy section of commerce in downtown Jerusalem.

Among Israel's neighbors, such an act could incite violence. In many areas of our own country, it might provoke outrage.

But in Israel, it's just an ordinary street scene: a mundane -- yet sublime -- statement of freedom within a broadly diverse, tolerant, and open culture.

With all of its flaws, the Zionist experiment has emerged -- quietly and vibrantly -- as a clear demonstration of the power of progressive values.

Feel free to criticize to Israel when it is wrong. But let's not fail to celebrate it when it is right. Because whenever liberal values flourish, they deserve our applause."

11. Now This Is A Rant - Pat Condell is not happy.

13. Reality Bites - New vs. Real

"In October 2011, Marwan Muasher, a vice president at the Carnegie Endowment and former deputy prime minister of Jordan, and Muhammad Faour, a senior associate at the Carnegie Mideast Center, served a wake-up call to New Middle Easterners: "People in the Arab world will discover that their societies are not equipped with the skills and values needed to accept different, pluralistic norms of behavior ... Any romantic notions in the West that the 2011 Arab uprisings could create instantaneous democracy, in countries that have succeeded at toppling their leaders, are already shattering ... Democracy will thrive only in a culture that accepts diversity, respects different points of view, regards truths as relative rather than absolute, and tolerates — even encourages — dissent."

16. Do You Know Day What Today Is? Pick one of the following:

November 29th is the annual marking of which of the following - see if you can guess:
  • Administrative Assistant's Day....
  • Grandparent's Day....
  • International Tolerance Day....
  • Groundhog Day.....
  • International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People...
  • World Poetry Day....

Was the answer too obvious?

The UN’s International Day of Solidarity Against the Jews | FrontPage Magazine

"In other words, every November 29th, the United Nations publicly mourns the passage of its own peaceful solution to the Arab-Jewish dispute, which had called for the establishment of an independent Arab state and independent Jewish state. Every year the UN commiserates over the adoption by the General Assembly of the 1947 partition resolution under which the Palestinians could have been living in their own independent state for the last sixty-four years if the Arabs had only accepted it. Even Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has conceded that the Arabs’ rejection of the partition resolution was a big mistake, but the day of mourning and grief over the Palestinians’ self-inflicted wounds go on anyway at the United Nations."

1. Can Anyone Explain This To Me? - I mean, really. Yet Another Reason Not to Fund UNESCO: Syria Elected Unanimously to UNESCO Human Rights Committees. I guess the stories in the next section are somehow irrelevant. For more on UNESCO - see Anav Silverman: UNESCO Fueling Cultural Conflict Over Hebron Holy Site and UNESCO Aids Palestinian Campaign to Expunge Jewish Heritage - Commentary Magazine - and here's a local angle - like I'd care if they "bless" Grand Pre.......why not have the new Syrian human rights members of the UNESCO committee investigate - they will probably find a way to blame the Jews for the expulsion of the Acadians. And where is UNESCO when this happens? Silence as Ukraine Erases Jewish Heritage Commentary Magazine.

2. Syria - "Assad the Ophthalmologist" is murdering and torturing his own people. Everyone knows it. The country is on the brink of all out civil war. Well after things had descended into chaos, the Arab League suspended Syria and now it is "considering" sanctions. (how long does anyone think it would have taken the Arab League to act if Israel had been the perpetrator?). Regardless, here are a variety of links to summarize the latest from Syria:

3. Egypt - events are also seriously spiraling out of control in Egypt:

5. Arab Spring? Try Arab Winter - I think that all the experts, and pundits who really expected an Arab Spring that would result in democratization and the like were hoping and dreaming. Democracy is a complicated process that traditionally democratic countries still have difficulty with (Occupy Wall Street, for example?). How could anyone reasonably expect countries with no history of democracy or democratic institutions - such as the rule of law, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, independent judiciary, human rights and freedom of religion. At least we did not have to wait forever for this predictable result to unfold. Let's see if anyone of the experts east their words - not likely, I'm guessing. Anyway, here is a good retrospective - VDH's Private Papers:: The Arab Winter Approaches. Also see - Iran's influence growing as Arab Spring continues | Full Comment | National Post

6. So Who Fills The Vacuum? Well, let's just say that it isn't the apparently mythical moderate Muslim (see - How to Tell Who is a “Moderate Islamist:” An Exam). The Muslim Brotherhood and its acolytes f political Islam are moving rapidly to fill the gap - which is not good news for anyone interested in peace and stability in the Middle East (or the world, for that matter).
7. Speaking Of Hezbollah - those wonderful guys....Blast rocks Hezbollah stronghold in south Lebanon and oh, by the way, Where’s UNIFIL? - JPost - Opinion - Editorials - oh, I forgot - the name starts with UN......

8. Don't Think I Forgot Iran - another group of nice guys.

9. Hamas and Fatah In A Tree... - K-I-S-S-I-N-G - with apologies to the old schoolyard rhyme. I guess Fatah must have forgotten about the 2007 Hamas flying experiment with live Fatah members. Anyway:

11. The Elite - none of the above probably bothers the ivory tower intellectuals - they are too busy abusing themselves (and us) with post-modernism and post-colonialism:

12. How Come We Don't Hear These Stories From Israel's Arab Neighbors? I'm just saying......

1. Antisemitism and Racism - Sadly, Never Out Of Fashion - here are just the latest examples (all from Europe):
I haven't seen many letters to the editor from the usual suspects about the failings of the so-called "Arab Spring", (also see - Egypt’s Tarir Square Explodes in Violence), nor the world's passivity on Iran and Syria. I guess they must just be saving their outrage for their next criticism of Israel - talk about selective outrage......

4. Radical Islam - um, the beat goes on.... (all from Europe - I'm sensing a trend here):

7. Syria - time's up, Assad....Syria: Time is running out for Bashar Assad | The Economist - as I think I have said in an earlier post - I'm trying to understand how and why Assad is getting an opportunity to exit "gracefully". Also see:
And why does he get a three day "deadline" - need extra torture and murder time? Death toll rises in Syria despite deadline... JPost - Diplomacy & Politics

9. UNESCO - like many things noted above in this posting, all I can say is the beat goes on..... - Robert Fulford: UNESCO’s Irina Bokova is the ultimate UN-ocrat | Full Comment | National Post - which means to say, that she's an idiot.

10. This Day In History - Today is the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's delivery of the Gettysburg Address - one of the most famous speeches in modern history. I have been to Gettysburg 6 times - if you have any interest in the Civil War, it is an absolutely amazing place to visit.

In any event, obviously, there were no video or audio recorders in existence at the time - in fact, a well-known anecdote about the event was that Lincoln's address was so brief (2 minutes) that the various photographers who were present had not even set up their cameras before he was finished. As a result, this is one of the only known pictures of Lincoln at Gettysburg.

I guess that since Edward Everett, the previous speaker (actually the featured speaker) and a former Governor of Massachusetts, had gone on for some two hours (as was the oratorical tradition of the day), this was understandable. No "sound bites" back then!

Here is a great dramatization of that famous event (filmed as a protest against the idea of building a casino at Gettysburg (editorial comment - a casino at Gettysburg - are you kidding me - when you are finished with that, why not build an ATM into the Western Wall in Jerusalem?????????????):

12. The Daily Show Exposes Occupy Wall Street - I used to be a fan of The Daily Show, though now I find it too "lefty" for my liking - maybe this will start to rebuild my enthusiasm for the show - and why doesn't the main stream media ask these questions?

Speaking of the Occupy Wall Street crowd (and I am not saying that this represents the prevailing sentiment of those involved), but I wish I could say that this story is satire - but it's not.....

A brief mixed bag this evening.

1. If It Bleeds, It Leads - Syria definitely qualifies under this header. My question is why Assad ultimately deserves any better fate than his pals Saddam, Osama and Khadaffi. While personally, I would not shed any tears if he took one in the noggin like Khadaffi or Osama, it would be better if he was tried by his own people and then faced a "short drop and a sudden stop" (to quote that leading intellectual Captain Jack Sparrow...).

Now it looks like the rats are jumping ship - there have been massive defections from the Syrian military and these defectors have attacked their former comrades. Here are a variety of links:

3. UNESCO - it's actually pronounced "hy-poc-ri-sy". Or "dou-ble stan-dards". You get the point:

4. Hamas - I agree with this article - we have all simply misunderstood Hamas - I Was Wrong About Hamas (great sarcasm!!). On the topic of these bloodthirsty, racist, misogynistic, terrorist murderers - Hamas Representative Addresses Tunisian Political Rally : Tunisia Live. But maybe things will change soon - There's An Adult In Charge. And on a related topic - The Muslim Brotherhood Spring

Monday, November 14, 2011

Hi there - been tied up over the last while and unable to blog. At least when blogging about Israel, there is never any shortage of material! Anyway, this edition will have some "old" and some "new".

1. Iran - Does anyone really doubt that Iran's nuclear ambitions are basically designed at developing nuclear weapons rather than domestic energy supplies? Here are several links related to Iran and this important story - which no one seems to want to really confront.

2. Syria - Can someone please explain why the Syrian "Thugocracy" deserves the benefit of negotiations and a possible soft landing for its murderous leadership?

3. The Palestinians - Why in the world would anyone give them a state? Is there a shortage of terrorist-loving, and Jew-hating countries in the United Nations that I have not heard about?
