1. Wow! - These guys need some serious help.......Iranian media: American troops subverting Islam with bitter "Muhammad" chocolates - Jihad Watch

2. Holland - Anti-Semitism soars in Holland - remember, this is where Theo van Gogh was brutally murdered by Islamic extremists. Ayaan Hirsi Ali had to flee Holland for fears over her personal safety. And, as is pointed out in the link - despite the Anne Frank story and the stories of Dutch resistance to the Nazis - Holland was full of Nazi collaborators during World War II - some 102,000 of 140,000 Dutch Jews were murdered during the Shoah.

4. It Would Be Wise To Remember This - The failure of the Gaza pullout - The Boston Globe

(took place 20 years later in Gaza too)

5. Pakistan - Whatever you think of rendering humanitarian aid to Pakistan in the aftermath of its devastating floods - and I realize there are strong feelings on both sides of the fence - you should read these links - Jewish groups to help Pakistan flood victims, "Muslim World Snubs UN's Pleas For $460M To Help Flood Victims" | The New Republic, and Pakistan: Flood aid withheld from "non-Muslim" Ahmadis as country depends on aid from... non-Muslims - Jihad Watch.

6. GZM - now with its own acronym - the Ground Zero Mosque - probably will have a Happy Meal soon at McDonald's! Before I post a variety of links, I will refer you to this link - Commentary » Blog Archive » Attacking American Muslims - which contains the following quote:
"Because the debate on the mosque near Ground Zero deals with extremely sensitive matters, it’s easy for things to spin out of control. So it’s particularly important that arguments be made with precision, with care, and even with some measure of grace and understanding."

11. Orde Wingate - those familiar with the British war in the Far East against Japan will recognize that Wingate was the founder of the famous "Chindits", airborne deep penetration troops who worked far behind enemy lines. He was also a deeply religious man and it was said that he felt that it was his Christian duty to help the Jewish community in Palestine form a Jewish State. Here is an in-depth consideration of Wingate's Zionism.

12. Very Very Strange -

Sunday, August 16, 2010

I was away last week and unable to update my blog - so there is lots to talk about!

1. Braveheart - the Mel Gibson reference is unintentional, though maybe it is a Freudian slip. In any event, I do not receive many comments for consideration, and of those I do, almost all are legitimate comments about something I have written about, or linked to. However, occasionally, I do get the odd piece of what I will loosely describe as "hate mail". Last week was one of those occasions when someone from the deep dark recesses of cyberspace, using the cloak of anonymity, submitted a rather nasty comment about Israel. I did not publish the comment as it served no purpose - I might be tempted to do so if the person had the courage (hence the title for this section) to give their true name and address.

While obviously I do not condone in the least anything that Mel said in his attack against Jews in 2006, or in his latest tirade there is at least one thing you can say abut Mel - he did not do things anonymously.

2. The Ground Zero Mosque - this story seems to grow by the minute. Friday, President Obama stated his support for the right of Muslims to build "... a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances". Yesterday, he backed off that comment by stating that he was "...not commenting on the wisdom" of the project." Sounds like the President will be awarded the "Waffler of the Year" title.

In the circumstances, I am 1,000,000% against the right to build the mosque. I do not believe this to be a freedom of religion issue. I believe that the overt purpose of the mosque is political, not religious. I do not think that the United States has to show tolerance in this fashion, especially when the leading national practitioners of Islam (e.g., Saudi Arabia) are anything but tolerant. As one of the many commentators on this issue has written, and I am paraphrasing, Islam is great at asking for (demanding) tolerance, but is not so great at showing it.

Here are a variety of links on this very current and controversial topic:
3. Islam - I am not going to smear every practitioner of Islam with the brush of radical Islam. I do not know a lot of Muslims, but the few I do know are the same as anyone else I know except they adhere to different religious beliefs. They are primarily interested in making a living and providing for their families.

That said, I think that there are a lot of misconceptions about Islam that need to be identified. For example, in my opinion, President Obama has vastly overstated the role of Islam in the history of the United States - Mr. Obama, "Islam had no influence on the origins and development of the United States" - Jihad Watch

4. Fundamental Islamic Values - Canadian imams issue declaration of fundamental Islamic values - why is it that the leaders can never quite go all the way and instead wrap themselves in basic, non-controversial statements?
