2. Syria - "Assad the Ophthalmologist" is murdering and torturing his own people. Everyone knows it. The country is on the brink of all out civil war. Well after things had descended into chaos, the Arab League suspended Syria and now it is "considering" sanctions. (how long does anyone think it would have taken the Arab League to act if Israel had been the perpetrator?). Regardless, here are a variety of links to summarize the latest from Syria:

5. Arab Spring? Try Arab Winter - I think that all the experts, and pundits who really expected an Arab Spring that would result in democratization and the like were hoping and dreaming. Democracy is a complicated process that traditionally democratic countries still have difficulty with (Occupy Wall Street, for example?). How could anyone reasonably expect countries with no history of democracy or democratic institutions - such as the rule of law, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, independent judiciary, human rights and freedom of religion. At least we did not have to wait forever for this predictable result to unfold. Let's see if anyone of the experts east their words - not likely, I'm guessing. Anyway, here is a good retrospective - VDH's Private Papers:: The Arab Winter Approaches. Also see - Iran's influence growing as Arab Spring continues | Full Comment | National Post
6. So Who Fills The Vacuum? Well, let's just say that it isn't the apparently mythical moderate Muslim (see - How to Tell Who is a “Moderate Islamist:” An Exam). The Muslim Brotherhood and its acolytes f political Islam are moving rapidly to fill the gap - which is not good news for anyone interested in peace and stability in the Middle East (or the world, for that matter).
