1. Always A Difficult Issue - The Holocaust's shadow over Israel's choices | csmonitor.com. Whatever one thinks about the subject, I always find it interesting to see how outsiders tell Jews and Israelis that they are too paranoid about their own survival - especially when there is a genocidal maniac in the neighborhood loudly proclaiming his intent to wipe Israel off the map. That said, and this is just a personal anecdotal observation, I think that the Israelis I have met would like nothing more to live in peace and security and not ever worry about their physical safety.

12. Way, Way, Way, Too Much Time On Their Hands - But VERY cool.....

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

The weather in Halifax continues to be hotter than the proverbial "hinges of H-E- double hockey-sticks"! But in January, we'll be longing for something, anything, that is warm.

1. Are you kidding me? Abbas: Talks with Hamas 'inevitable,' but not with Israel | Middle East | Jerusalem Post The latest is a series, likely a continuing series, of astounding comments from the supposed moderate peace partner.

2. Gee, Thanks For The Heads-Up..... - Al-Qaeda warns of 'spectacular attacks' on UK - Express India. It is a "can't miss" model (see cartoon below). I doubt that this will arrest the UK's slide into more and more ridiculous submissions to demands from its minority Muslim population - see, for example, yesterday's posting about burqinis, as well as here and here.

4. Rather Important To Know - Commentary » Blog Archive » Who Is Human Rights Watch’s Joe Stork? I think you will be shocked - bear this in mind when reading material from this organization (and many other such organizations). (Thanks to Seraphic Secret for the lead.)

Today was one of those rare days in Halifax where people complain about the heat - better not complain! Anyway, here is a limited edition blog for today - blame the heat!

1. Is the Difference Black & White? Why did this not degenerate into Gates-Gate? Why did the President not offer an unsolicited opinion on this matter - Bob Dylan a complete unknown in New Jersey town. Dylan's fame puts that of Gates to shame - I guess the difference is that he is "cooler" than Gates.

8. Is Anyone Misunderstanding What Abbas Is Saying? - David Horovitz's Column: Not Obama, but Abbas | Columnists | Jerusalem Post

Worthy columns and editorials notwithstanding, you see, it's not what the US president isn't saying directly to us that's most worrying for Israelis. It's what the Palestinian leadership is saying, to its own people and to anyone else who's listening: far too much that is deeply troubling, and far too little that engenders good faith.

10. These Guys Clearly Have Too Much Time On Their Hands

Saturday, August 15, 2009 (Motzei Shabbat)

1. The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same - Talk about "prescience" - check out. F L A M E : Israel's Peculiar Position by Eric Hoffer.

2. United Church - I hope that this is the last item on the Church and the anti-Israel proposals until the next General Council next year.

"With a sense of urgency, the Council recommended that United Church Conferences, presbyteries, congregations, and community ministries immediately enter into consultation, dialogue, study, and prayer, and then undertake appropriate action toward ending the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory. It also asked these bodies to enter into conversation as to how to move the two peoples toward reconciliation, including, but not limited to, economic boycott."
Sorry, I find this to be arrogant and misguided. The proposed actions of "...consultation, dialogue, study and prayer.." are to be taken with the goal of undertaking "appropriate action toward ending the illegal occupation..." Doesn't sound like a very open-minded process - the goal has apparently already been determined. As well, having "boycott" and "reconciliation" in the same sentence is, in my humble opinion, ludicrous.

The notion of prayer sounds very condescending - like when someone else tells you that they are going to pray for you - the implication being that you are deficient in some manner and need them, who are in some sense morally superior, to pray for you.

This has been explained to me on the basis that the theology in the United Church places great emphasis on the writings of the Prophets - especially the Book of Amos which, after containing admonitions of the nations that surrounded ancient Israel, then tells the Israelites that G-d is going to judge Israel for its sins, and it will be a foreign nation that will enact his judgment. Apparently, the modern United Church believes that among its purposes is to act as the moral guide for the State of Israel.

It seems to me that we Jews, who after all, constitute the 85% majority of the population of Israel, cannot win. Either people hate us because we say that we arrogantly assert that we are the Chosen People (which other do as well, by the way) or we are lectured that we do not live up the that mantle.

There are serious issues to be resolved between Israel and the Palestinians. The help pf outsiders will likely be necessary. However, this type of one-sided input is not going to help, but only make things worse. At the start of this most recent version of the controversial, I took the view that it was probably unfair to label the United Church as an entity as being anti-Semitic. But now, having done a lot of investigation, noting in particular the manner in which the Church is dealing with only this issue and not issues in Iran, China, Russia, Sudan, Venezuela and so on, and having regard to the decision reached at the General Council, I am very concerned that the direction of the Church smacks of being ant-Semitic.

3. Here's Something For The United Church To Get Worked Up About - The fate of the Baha'i in Iran - see also Iran to try 7 Baha'is accused of spying for Israel | International | Jerusalem Post. By the way, the principal holy site of the Baha'i religion is located in Haifa - I have been fortunate enough to visit there - it is a spectacular spot.

5. Denmark & the Holocaust - The story of Denmark and the Holocaust is well-known. The movie reviewed in this article represents a different angle - No Danish Patsies – Forward.com.

7. Trouble in Gaza - and no one has blamed it on Israel (yet?) - Al Qaida-linked group: Gaza is an Islamic emirate | Middle East | Jerusalem Post and VOA News - 24 Palestinians Killed as Rival Islamic Groups Clash in Gaza - how come Hamas is allowed to conduct a "fierce assault" on dissidents in a mosque without the lefties and peace-niks going berserk?

9. Election Fraud -Fatah's Gaza leaders quit, citing massive vote fraud | Middle East | Jerusalem Post - shouldn't "Jimmah" be all over this?

1. United Church Update - First, the good news - The Canadian Jewish Congress has just issued a news release advising that the anti-Israel boycott, sanction and divestment resolutions have been defeated. Here is a story about this latest development from The National Post.

That said, I think it is safe to say that this issue is not over by a long shot. So, in that vein, here are some further comments on this issue - FrontPage Magazine - Condemn or Boycott?, How Israel became South Africa - The Globe and Mail (fantastic column by Margaret Wente of The Globe and Mail), What's the United Church really up to? | Comment | Winnipeg Sun, and Boycott to some, shunning to others from The National Post.

3. Are You Kidding Me? I usually listen to my good friend Andrew Krystal and his show Maritime Morning on Rogers 95.7 in Halifax. This morning he talked about the banning of To Kill A Mockingbird by a school in Brampton, Ontario. The reason? The book contains the disgusting word - "nigger". Andrew was right - that is no reason to ban a book - it shows ignorance on the part of parents and laziness on the part of educators and administrators. He pointed out that the book is about, among other things, tolerance and good parenting.

Here is the story as reported by Global News and The Toronto Star.

At the end of the day, however, and with no due respect, I think that this is all a bunch of politically correct baloney.

4. Speaking of Politically Correct Foolishness - I think that in any decision making process, it is good to look at the intended decision to see if it really makes sense. Sometimes, taking logical steps lands you in some ridiculous spot - such as here - Lost in Translation: English Nazi Slogans Are Legal, German Court Rules - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International.

5. Speaking of Politically Correct Foolishness, Part 2 - Yale University Press is publishing "The Cartoons That Shook The World" by Jytte Klausen. In an amazing show of timidity and intellectual dishonesty, the University itself and the publisher have decreed that the book cannot contain the 12 images of Prophet Mohammed that caused such a stir in 2005, nor any other images of the Prophet that had been intended to be included. Not surprisingly, the story has prompted outrage - see Yale Press Bans Images of Muhammad in New Book by Jytte Klausen - NYTimes.com, Roger’s Rules » “The scholarship equivalent of Yale donning a burqa to suppress the temptations its immodesty might otherwise inspire, and Hot Air » Blog Archive » Disgrace: Yale removes Mohammed cartoons from book about … Mohammed cartoons.
