3. What Do You Think Of This, Part I? Is it funny? Is it disrespectful? Is it scandalous? (you can tell what the person who posted the video on YouTube Thought). IDF soldiers face penalty after uploading Hebron dance video to YouTube - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News. My sense is that it was humorous and was likely intended as an internal joke - no one was being taunted, etc. - but I can understand that the IDF would not be amused.
4. What Do You Think Of This, Part II? While I can understand why some people are upset, my initial reaction is that if I survived Auschwitz, I would have the right to celebrate my survival pretty much as I thought fit - which may not at all be the way another survivor might do so.

I didn't find anything offensive about the IDF dancing in the streets of Hebron--if anything it typifies the way we Jews deal with adversity and hostility particularly in that region. On that same continuum that personal family tribute to a father and grandfather who survived Auschwitz, and who agreed with the premise of this video, kudos to him. Even if some survivors wouldn't mark the event this way- this is their choice. I will mention however that my late father-in-law shared that humour was the only way he survived his tour of the concentration camps - sometimes a dead rat would be placed in someone's shoes and even in those dire circumstances a momentary laugh would make him feel human---Victor Frankel, the author shared similar comments. Of course the full 4 minute video presented differently than the 30 second presentation shown on CTV which made the concept look tasteless. My opinion is that both these videos are a direct riposte to Hamas which forbids music to any one who dares criticize how we Jews ought to deal deal with adversity. Let em walk a mile in our shoes....A.S.
ReplyDeleteLoved the Shalom Y'all story. A $50,000 start is a nice incentive but how long can that last if there are no jobs for those who wish to relocate to a new town. We moved to Halifax 15 years ago. Our son was a student then and he graduated with honours from Dal. My husband moved us here because his company transferred him . We have no connections and expected our son to find employment here but without connections he is dead in the water. We tried and he tried every which way to find a job but nobody in the Jewish community except for one decent laywer distributed his resume but this wasn't/isn't enough. If it wasn't for a few people "from away" we would have disappeared from view long ago because there is virtually no real outreach to members of the tribe in this town. People here are polite but cold. At least that couple are "bamas"- from Alabama but we have had no such luck for our son. A.S.
