1. What Existed Prior To The Holocaust? - I think that many people, including many Jewish people, forget the wonderful world that existed in Eastern Europe prior to the Holocaust. Here is a very interesting reminder and an inspiring story - They Called Me Mayer July: Painted Memories of Jewish Childhood.
2. Lockerbie Disgrace - One of many recent outrageous stories - what on earth entitles this man (?) to the compassion denied to his victims? U.S. condemns release of Lockerbie bomber| Reuters and Release of Lockerbie Bomber Is a Criminal Injustice - WSJ.com. As usual, Dry Bones sums up things very well in his cartoon:

It goes without saying that trivializing the Holocaust is unacceptable, but clearly what this woman is saying, for dramatic effect, is not anti-semitic. She is not using this reference in the same way that PETA has. She is in fact articulating what a preponderance of Americans are saying about this Health Care reform package which proposes some very dangerous policies concerning life and death decisions which are eerily reminscent of the Nazi era. Barney Frank, a politician, is capitalizing on this reference in order to obfuscate the facts. I think that he is shamefuly using the ethnic card by reducing it to a clichee. He has deftly turned around the whole thing by reducing her to a nut while simultaneously sidestepping the questions that need to be answered responsably and in an accountable manner.
ReplyDeleteThere is an interesting tale about an elderly Arab who is deprived of his afternoon nap because neighbourhood children have relocated their play area beneath his window. To trick them he spreads a false rumour that vendors are spontaneously distributing figs on unpredictable days in the marketplace. Not wishing to be left out, he follows the crowds forgetting that he was the one who invented this lie. Tammimi reminds me of that prevaricator that if you say something often enough, you will soon begin to believe your own lies,
ReplyDeleteIt is duplicitous that Obama condemns the release of the Lockerbie bomber who is dying of cancer and yet he insists that the Israeli's release healthy captured Palestinian terrorists in exchange for peace which so far has not happened. Using his logic does that mean that only terminal terrorists are held accountable?
ReplyDeleteThey Call Me Mayer was an interesting retrospective pre Holocaust days but what is not reflected is the modern way of life which Jews also participated in as reflected in many movies starring Molly Picon and others. I know, I own these videos. My concern is that the loss of life did not happen only to quaint little "shtetl" people, it also happened to the elite in large cities who were well integrated into the secular culture, and yet they too were eliminated.
