In the revisionist world of today, there is much criticism of the use of such a weapon by the United States to the effect that Harry Truman was a war criminal for authorizing its use. While there can be little doubt that terrible civilian casualties resulted, one must put the use of that weapon in the fuller context of the military situation that existed at the start of August 1945. I do not think that I can do better than this video commentary by Keith Whittle - it is long but well worth it. And, at the same time, we should remember the victims of the bomb - those who died an instantaneous death and those who died a slow, lingering, painful death - and hope that such a weapon never will be used again.
